·        Kayaking

·        Mountain biking

·        Sailing

Cadets will be instructed by qualified and experienced staff for the activity they are undertaking. Staff taking cadets on wild country activities will have or will be under the supervision with Mountain Leader qualifications. All activities are subject to approval by our Wing Adventure Training Technical Officer and by Region to ensure all necessary safeguards are in place.

The Wing holds at least one Adventure Training camps at one of the two RAF Air Cadet Adventure Training Centres. These camps are normally held in the summer months.

The RAF Air Cadets have two purpose built activity training centres, one located at Windermere in the Lake District, the other located at Fairbourne in North Wales allowing for a wide range of activities.

TEN TORS

Planning for the training of the cadets for the event starts soon after the previous event has finished with the actual training starting late autumn when cadets are initially taught the theory about navigation and safety on the moors.

Once theory has been taught the cadets undertake a number of training days and latterly weekends with ever increasing walking distances in preparation for the event. Initially these walks will be conducted with a qualified member of staff who over the course of training will increase their distance to the group while still monitoring their progress. By the time of the event the team leader will have selected team members who they are confident will be able to safely navigate the course in a wide range of conditions.

The Wing has a dedicated cadre of staff qualified to instruct cadets to undertake the challenge that is Ten Tors. Undertaken over three distances 35, 45 and 55 mile routes over two days the participants of the Ten Tors event are required to navigate over the wild country of Dartmoor to visit ten tors. Such is the demand the minimum age is 14, 15 and 16 for the three respective distances.
