CAMPS

RAF STATION CAMPS

Camps at RAF Stations form part of the RAF Air Cadet experience. These camps are normally held in school holidays at Easter, Summer and in the Autumn half term to allow application by all cadets who may wish to attend.

While at the week-long camp, the cadets will visit a number of the units based at the station and also undertake a number of external visits. They will have a programme set by the Air Cadet Liaison Officer based at the station which will include many activities often including flying, shooting and sport.

The Wing holds at least one Adventure Training camps at one of the two RAF Air Cadet Adventure Training Centres. These camps are normally held in the summer months.

Cadets wishing to attend camp must be enrolled and have completed their First Class classification before attending.

RIAT

The Royal International Air Tattoo (RIAT) is the world’s largest military air show which is held annually at RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire with military aircraft attending from many countries.

It is also the RAF Air Cadets largest camp with around 1000 staff and cadets attending from across the UK in order to provide assistance to the organisers in many tasks from Crown Line supervision to VIP hosting. While this may sound like work, duties normally only last a morning or an afternoon each day with the other part of the day free for the cadets to explore the show with many aircrews giving cadets special access to their static displays.

OVERSEAS CAMPS

Overseas camps while still subsidised are more expensive to attend though still offers great value and a unique experience to the cadets.

There are a number of overseas camps including at RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus and RAF Gibraltar. These camps are open to cadets who have reached their 15th birthday, are Leading cadet or above and have attended a UK camp.

Music Camps

The Wing has many talented cadets including cadets who have been playing music instruments for years and new musicians who have just discovered the joy the playing of an instrument can give. The Wing holds a number of local music days and weekends for cadets within the Wing to come together to play music.

Camps for musicians allow those cadets who play instruments to meet other cadets from other Wings with similar interests and create music together under instruction from staff with musical experience.

International Air Cadet Exchange (IACE)

The UK is not the only country with Air Cadets, in fact there are Air Cadets in nearly every continent and with many having similar ideology, the teaching of skills for life, exchanges between different cadet organisations take place each year such that cadets and staff will be hosted by staff and cadets of another country and vice versa. On such exchanges cadets will see how cadets from other countries operate and what activities they do but also get to sight see around the country.
