With the retirement of Squadron Leader Tony Windo in October 2020 as the Wing Adventure Training Technical Officer (WATTO) after 53 years of uniform service the hunt was on to find a new WATTO.

The task would not be easy as Sqn Ldr Windo had a wealth of experience in Adventure Training from Ten Tors to rock climbing, a passion which lead to his decision to create his own rock climbing business, Granite Planet.

Following a selection process which culminated in an interview with the Plymouth & Cornwall Commanding Officer, Wing Commander Reis, the Deputy Wing Commander, Squadron Leader Ward and the Regional ATTO, Squadron Leader Butt, Flight Lieutenant George Blackbourn was selected to hold the post of Wing Adventure Training Technical Officer.

Flight Lieutenant Blackbourn is very experience in many forms of adventure training from mountaineering to mountain biking, he is a regular at the two annual adventure training camps at Windermere and Fairbourne in Wales as well as on Dartmoor for the Ten Tors training and challenge and up to his appointment he was the Deputy WATTO as well as Officer Commanding 2553 (Bodmin) Squadron.

Having filled the role of WATTO the role of Deputy WATTO is now vacant, the process to fill this post will commence in January 2021.

Congratulations to Flt Lt Blackbourn in his appointment to Wing Training Technical Officer.
