ROAD MARCHING
ROAD MARCHING The
RAF Air Cadets have for some time been involved in road marches, a historic
activity originating in the movement of troops over long distances using
tracks and roads. A
major road marching event is held at Nijmegen, Netherlands where teams march routes
of 30, 40, and 50 kilometres each day for four days. Dating
back to 1909 involving 296 soldiers and 10 civilians the event has become the
world’s largest walking event with over 45000 participants consisting of
military and civilians from over 70 nations. |

The Wing has a Road Marching Officer who coordinates training at
Wing level with short training walks extending each time in preparation for
the RAF Walking and Road Marching Association (RAFWARMA) two-day march
centred around RAF Cosford in which they will meet road
marching teams from other wings. RAF Air Cadets who meet the required standards are awarded
badges to acknowledge their achievements. |
